People Who May Be Able to Help

As parents you are already under a great deal of pressure. It can be very difficult to find the time and emotional energy to explain what is happening to brothers and sisters.

Some brothers and sisters are very aware of their parents’ worries and don’t want to add to them by asking their own questions. It can therefore be helpful for people from outside the immediate family to talk to brothers or sisters. Friends and relatives whom the child knows and trusts may be able to help.

The following is a list of people who may be available to help. Some of these staff will have specialist knowledge about the disease and treatment, others will be experienced in helping children cope with other difficult situations.

  • Macmillan/CLIC nurse or other hospital or community nurse
  • Sargent Social Worker
  • Play specialist
  • Health visitor
  • Teacher
  • Psychologist

Ask at your treatment centre for other local sources of support.
