On the Ward

Smiling faces. Shining heads.
Gazing out from well-made beds.

Parents with an anxious look.
One kind word was all it took.

Brothers and sisters affected too.
And no-one knowing what to do.

Doctors, nurses and caring folk
Will sometimes stop to share a joke.

Always there’s that question ‘why?’
And please don’t say my child might die.

Hope and courage by the ton
For battles lost and battles won.
