Reflections on childhood cancer
A book of poems

Sara Court

Sara’s young son Jack died from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

I wrote this poem in tribute to my mother. Without her help and support I wouldn’t be here today. Jack was her first grandchild and she loved him with all her heart.

Mother

I can’t begin to put into words
How grateful I am to you
To have a Mum so wonderful
Beautiful and loving too.

I don’t know how I’d get through this
Without you by my side
To wipe my tears and hug me
Because my son had nearly died.

I know it must be hard for you
After all that you’ve been through
You too had someone special
Who was very close to you

I know you’ll always be here for me
Through the good times and the bad
That’s why you’re a Mum in a million
The best I could have had.

THE LOVE OF A MOTHER

The first time I ever saw your face
I knew my life was complete
To hold you in my loving arms
I knew you were mine for keeps

The joy you brought to my life
For the months that you were here
To see you smile all through your pain
And never shed a tear.

The disease controlled your body
Bruises and pale skin
Never once did you complain
Or attempt to even give in.

God saw you playing happily
But said your time had come
I knew you couldn’t leave me
Because you knew I was your mum.

You didn’t want to leave me
Because you knew I’d be alone
I held you in my loving arms
And said “God is calling you home.”

You closed your eyes for one last time
And your breath started to fade away
I knew you didn’t want to leave us
But the angels said “It’s your day.”

Goodnight my little sunshine
Rest in peace above
I’ll meet you in heaven someday
When I can shower you with love
