Reflections on childhood cancer
A book of poems

Daniel Pollock

Daniel wrote this poem for his partner Charlotte while she was undergoing an operation at Christie’s hospital.

CHARLOTTE’S POEM

Caring is loving, and giving you all
Listening so carefully, in case you should call,
Why, oh why, are you like this?
I bend over slowly and give you a kiss.

You know that I love you, there is no doubt,
Even when I get stressed out,
I will be here, right to the end,
Your boyfriend, your lover, your very best friend.

I give you your tablets, and change your clothes
What you are suffering nobody knows
This shouldn’t be happening, not to you
But it’s out of my hands, what can I do?

If only I could I’d cure you now,
Somebody please, show me how,
There’s nothing in this world that I want more,
Than to take your pain, and kick it out the door.

I cannot lose hope, I love you too much,
I wish I had the magic touch,
If only I could have it, just for a day,
Then I would magic your pain away.

Oh how I wish I could turn back time,
To have that still beautiful girl of mine,
All that I want is for you to be well,
But all of the time you’re going through hell.

I want you to know that I’m here for you,
To help you, and love you, is all I will do,
I’ll make sure you’re safe, and look after you well,
I’ll hang around you like a very bad smell!

All I can say is I love you dear,
As I wipe away a very big tear,
But don’t worry babe, it’ll be alright,
The morphine will make you as high as a kite!

I love you so much, with all of my heart,
I’ve loved you like this right from the start,
And to the very last day I do send,
All my love to you.
